Why do I experience bad breath and a bitter taste in my mouth upon waking up?
Disease description:
I experience bad breath and a bitter taste in my mouth every time I wake up. This has never happened before—what could be causing this recently? What causes bad breath and a bitter taste upon waking?
Bad breath during sleep is a physiological phenomenon. While sleeping, the mouth remains closed, and activities such as speaking, eating, and drinking cease—leading to reduced self-cleansing capacity in the oral cavity. As a result, oral epithelial cells and food debris undergo decomposition and necrosis, producing hydrogen sulfide—a foul-smelling compound—that causes halitosis. Upon waking, a bitter taste in the mouth warrants evaluation of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disorders, particularly bile reflux due to hepatobiliary dysfunction.
