Differences Between Acute and Chronic Cervicitis
Disease description:
I frequently experience abnormal vaginal discharge and discomfort in the lower abdomen. My doctor diagnosed me with chronic cervicitis. Could you please explain the difference between acute and chronic cervicitis?
Acute cervicitis represents the acute phase of cervical inflammation. During this stage, vaginal discharge significantly increases and is predominantly purulent or mucopurulent. Gynecological examination reveals marked local cervical hyperemia, often accompanied by severe lower abdominal discomfort and low back pain. In contrast, chronic cervicitis typically presents with subtle or nonspecific symptoms, such as persistent leukorrhea, dull low back pain, and a sensation of pelvic heaviness or pressure. Prolonged inflammatory stimulation of the cervix may even lead to postcoital bleeding.
