Can a stethoscope diagnose pediatric pneumonia?
Disease description:
My child has been coughing persistently lately, without fever. I’m worried it might be pneumonia—can a stethoscope diagnose pediatric pneumonia?
In most cases, pediatric pneumonia can be diagnosed using a stethoscope. If pneumonia is present, the stethoscope may detect distinct moist rales or wheezing sounds. However, auscultation with a stethoscope only allows for a preliminary diagnosis; further diagnostic tests—such as a chest X-ray and complete blood count (CBC)—are required to confirm the diagnosis and assess the condition in detail. In cases of pneumonia, the CBC typically reveals an elevated neutrophil count, while the chest X-ray shows pulmonary infiltrates indicative of infection.
