Postmenopausal pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) generally does not resolve spontaneously; the longer the condition persists, the more difficult it becomes to treat. PID does not resolve simply because a woman has entered menopause. Following menopause, decreased sexual activity may reduce the likelihood of developing PID. However, if chronic PID lesions are present, the decline in immune function associated with menopause may cause these chronic lesions to progress to subacute—or even acute—disease. Therefore, women diagnosed with PID should seek prompt and active treatment. Early intervention—ideally initiated at the onset of symptoms—greatly enhances the likelihood of rapid recovery.
