Causes of Hypokalemia Induced by Hydrochlorothiazide Tablets
Disease description:
A friend told me that hydrochlorothiazide tablets can easily cause hypokalemia. What is the mechanism by which hydrochlorothiazide induces hypokalemia?
Hydrochlorothiazide tablets inhibit potassium absorption and enhance potassium excretion, thereby predisposing patients to hypokalemia. These tablets typically inhibit the reabsorption of chloride and sodium ions in the distal convoluted tubule and kidney, while also increasing urine output and potassium excretion. Consequently, prolonged or high-dose administration of hydrochlorothiazide tablets may readily lead to hypokalemia.
