Do I need to fast before a blood test for hypothyroidism?
Disease description:
Recently, my appetite has not been as good as before, and I’m concerned that it might be caused by hypothyroidism. I plan to visit the hospital for a blood test—do I need to fast before having blood drawn for hypothyroidism testing?
Hypothyroidism blood tests generally do not require fasting; eating before the test typically does not affect the results. Hypothyroidism is usually caused by decreased thyroid function, and blood tests primarily measure levels of T3, T4, and free T3 to assess the severity of the condition. During treatment for hypothyroidism, regular follow-up visits to the hospital for retesting are also necessary.
