Can I eat mangoes when I have a sore throat?
Disease description:
A friend sent me a box of large mangoes for my birthday, but I have a sore throat. Can I eat mangoes when I have a sore throat?
A sore throat (pharyngitis) does not preclude eating mangoes; however, excessive consumption should be avoided, as mangoes are considered “heat-inducing” in traditional Chinese medicine and may exacerbate throat pain. Amoxicillin capsules may be taken, or cephalosporin-class antibiotics may be used as an alternative. Patients with mango allergy must avoid mangoes entirely, as ingestion can trigger allergic reactions—ranging from general discomfort to life-threatening anaphylaxis. During illness, it is advisable to consume more cooling and soothing fruits, such as snow pears, apples, and bananas.
