Can ear mites infect humans?

Ear mites are not contagious; this condition likely results from mites entering the ear canal. Mites are commonly found in the environment—particularly in bedding and on floors—so it is important to wash bedding regularly and maintain a clean indoor environment. At home, periodic disinfection with diluted chlorhexidine solution can help minimize the mite population. Upon infecting humans, mites may trigger allergic reactions—especially in the ears—and can also cause otitis externa (outer ear infection) and discomfort around the ears.
