It's best not to eat hawthorn if you have gastroenteritis, because hawthorn is an acidic food that can easily stimulate increased gastric acid secretion, thereby worsening acid reflux symptoms and hindering recovery. However, patients with chronic atrophic gastritis may consume small amounts of hawthorn appropriately to aid digestion. Dietary recommendations vary depending on the type of gastritis. Excessive consumption of hawthorn may lead to overproduction of gastric acid and cause severe indigestion.
