How to interpret influenza A and B test results

Influenza A and B testing is a nucleic acid test targeting two types of viruses—influenza A virus and influenza B virus—primarily used to diagnose the specific type of influenza virus infection. The test is based on immunological assay principles utilizing antigen specificity, with viral nucleic acids serving as antigens. It detects the presence of these viruses in various body fluids such as sputum, ocular fluid, nasal secretions, and cerebrospinal fluid. The detected nucleic acids are then used for lineage analysis and PCR amplification. A positive result indicates infection with either influenza A or B virus, while a negative result suggests no influenza virus infection. Typically, results from influenza A and B testing are available by the next clinic visit, although in some cases, it may take longer.
