Can shingles cause constipation?
Disease description:
Can shingles cause constipation?
Shingles may cause constipation. Shingles is a common viral infection that can be transmitted through contact with the patient's skin or exposure to the patient's secretions, such as saliva. After a latent period, shingles causes blisters to form on the patient's skin; these blisters eventually rupture and lead to pain and itching. It may also result in gastrointestinal symptoms, including constipation. This occurs because the varicella-zoster virus may infect the gastrointestinal tract and cause intestinal spasms, leading to constipation. In addition, the virus may damage the intestinal mucosa, impairing nutrient absorption and thereby contributing to constipation. Patients with shingles should closely monitor their gastrointestinal symptoms and seek medical attention promptly if constipation develops.
