What should I do if my face swells after wisdom tooth extraction?
Facial swelling is a normal physiological response that typically peaks on the second day after surgery and then gradually subsides. Patients can alleviate facial swelling using the following methods: After wisdom tooth extraction, apply an ice pack or ice wrapped in a cloth gently to the swollen area for 10–15 minutes at a time, 3–4 times per day. If swelling is accompanied by pain, patients may take anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or aspirin orally under medical guidance. After wisdom tooth removal, patients should keep their head elevated and avoid lying face down or bending forward, as this reduces blood flow to the head and helps minimize swelling. Patients should choose soft foods and avoid excessive chewing. Cold foods such as ice cream may also help soothe swelling and discomfort.
