How to replace the battery in a cardiac pacemaker
The process of "replacing the battery" in a cardiac pacemaker actually refers to replacing the entire pacemaker device, as the battery is integrated within the pulse generator and cannot be replaced separately. When the pacemaker's battery power becomes low, the following steps are required to replace the device:
1. Preoperative preparation: After confirming low battery via pacemaker programming, preoperative evaluations—including electrocardiogram, chest X-ray, or echocardiography—are performed to ensure the patient is fit for surgery.
2. Surgical procedure: Under local anesthesia, the physician inserts a temporary pacemaker via the right femoral vein to maintain cardiac safety during the operation. The original incision site is reopened to expose the old pacemaker, and the condition of the leads is evaluated. If the leads are in good condition, the old pulse generator is disconnected from the leads and a new pacemaker is connected and implanted. Once the new device is securely in place, the temporary pacemaker is removed and the wound is sutured.
3. Postoperative care: After surgery, patients should follow medical advice for recovery, including regular hospital check-ups to monitor pacemaker function and prevent infection.
