How long does it take for sperm to fertilize an egg?

Disease description:

I had intercourse with my wife yesterday, but today she tested strongly positive on an ovulation test strip. We’re unsure whether conception is still possible in this situation. I’d like to know how long it takes for sperm and egg to unite.

Hello, sperm and egg typically fuse within approximately 24 hours after intercourse. Following ejaculation, sperm rapidly travel from the vagina through the cervix and uterus into the fallopian tubes—usually reaching the tubes within about one hour. If the fallopian tubes are patent, fertilization (i.e., union of sperm and egg) generally occurs within roughly 24 hours. If intercourse coincides with ovulation, a fertilized egg (zygote) typically forms within about one week. We hope this information is helpful to you. Wishing you good health and happiness!
