The severity of green or yellow sputum cannot be determined solely by color and must be assessed by considering multiple factors. Yellow sputum often indicates a bacterial infection and may be a sign of respiratory inflammation, such as pneumonia or bronchitis.

Green sputum usually suggests a more severe infection, possibly due to specific bacterial infections or prolonged illness with disease progression.

However, assessing the severity of the condition requires taking other symptoms into account, such as the level of fever, intensity of cough, presence of breathing difficulties, and severity of systemic symptoms. If only a small amount of yellow sputum is present and other symptoms are mild, the illness may be relatively minor. However, even with yellow sputum, if accompanied by high fever, severe cough, rapid breathing, or other serious symptoms, the condition could be quite severe. Similarly, small amounts of green sputum without significant discomfort do not necessarily indicate a serious illness; however, if there is a large amount of green sputum combined with severe systemic symptoms, the condition may indeed be serious.

If you experience any bodily discomfort, you should seek medical attention promptly.
