Is enema effective for chronic colitis?
Disease description:
Recently, I've been having severe abdominal pain and some constipation. After examination, the doctor diagnosed me with chronic colitis. I've heard that enema treatment might help. Is enema effective for chronic colitis?
Enema therapy for chronic colitis is somewhat effective. Enemas allow medication to be delivered directly to the affected area through local administration, thereby achieving therapeutic purposes. This treatment tends to be more effective for inflammation in the sigmoid colon and rectum, but may be less effective for inflammation in the ascending colon, transverse colon, and proximal cecum. The choice of enema solution and frequency of administration are also important factors influencing treatment outcomes. Commonly used solutions include Kangfuxin liquid or prednisone mixed with warm normal saline, administered once or twice daily, with a treatment cycle typically lasting two weeks. However, enema therapy is only an adjunctive treatment for chronic colitis. Patients should combine it with other treatments such as oral medications or surgical intervention to achieve optimal results.
