The phenomenon of bad breath caused by Helicobacter pylori infection is primarily due to the bacterium's secretion of urease when active in the gastrointestinal tract or oral cavity. Urease breaks down urea into carbon dioxide and ammonia. Ammonia is a gas with a strong pungent odor that easily travels up through the esophagus and exits via the mouth, leading to halitosis. This type of bad breath usually cannot be effectively relieved by routine oral hygiene alone and typically improves significantly only after successful eradication of the H. pylori infection. Specifically, H. pylori infection may lead to gastrointestinal disorders such as indigestion, chronic gastritis, and gastric ulcers, causing prolonged food retention and decomposition in the stomach, which in turn produces foul odors. Additionally, factors such as poor dietary habits, oral diseases, or medication use may exacerbate halitosis. To alleviate bad breath associated with H. pylori infection, it is recommended to undergo professional dental cleaning, medical treatment, maintain good personal hygiene, adopt healthy eating habits, and avoid sharing eating utensils with others to reduce the risk of cross-infection.
