I've developed pimples on my body these past couple of days. They say it's folliculitis, possibly caused by a bacterial infection or a fungal infection. I'm really curious to know how to differentiate between fungal and bacterial folliculitis.

The differentiation of folliculitis is mainly based on its etiological factors, clinical symptoms, and treatment methods. In terms of causation, fungal folliculitis is commonly caused by Malassezia furfur, whereas bacterial folliculitis is mostly due to infection with Staphylococcus aureus. Regarding clinical manifestations, fungal folliculitis presents as hemispherical red papules accompanied by itching, without central pus. In contrast, bacterial folliculitis lesions appear as red papules with yellowish-white pus at the apex and may be associated with scars and pain. Finally, in terms of treatment, fungal folliculitis requires antifungal medications such as compound ketoconazole ointment, while bacterial folliculitis is commonly treated with antibiotics such as mupirocin ointment. Through comprehensive evaluation of these aspects, fungal and bacterial folliculitis can be effectively differentiated.
