Why does dry mouth and throat occur during sleep at night in pregnancy?
Disease description:
I confirmed my pregnancy last week, and since then I have almost every night experienced dry mouth and throat upon going to sleep. Sometimes this also happens during the day. I would like to know why dry mouth and throat occur during sleep in pregnancy?
Possible causes of dry mouth and throat during sleep in pregnancy include the following:
1. Hormonal changes: During pregnancy, the influence of estrogen levels in the body may cause dryness of the nasal mucosa, throat, and other areas, leading to a sensation of dry mouth and throat.
2. Indoor environment: If the indoor temperature is too high or the air is excessively dry, it may also cause pregnant women to experience dry mouth and throat during sleep.
3. Dietary factors: If a pregnant woman does not drink enough water over an extended period or consumes insufficient water before bedtime, her mouth may not receive adequate hydration, which can lead to dry mouth and throat. Consuming heavily seasoned, salty, or spicy foods before bedtime can also contribute to moisture loss in the mouth.
4. Internal heat: During pregnancy, the body constitution may tend toward Yin deficiency, making it more susceptible to internal heat, which can cause symptoms of dry mouth and throat.
To alleviate these symptoms, it is recommended that pregnant women drink more water, maintain a moist indoor environment, and follow a light diet, avoiding excessive consumption of spicy or irritating foods. If concerns persist, patients are advised to seek timely medical consultation.
