Can cough without fever be a sign of pneumonia?
Disease description:
I am 35 years old, female. I started feeling discomfort in my throat the day before yesterday, and I have had a slight cough since then, but no fever. I would like to ask the doctor whether this situation could be pneumonia.
Cough without fever may still be a sign of pneumonia. Cough and fever are not definitive symptoms of pneumonia; diagnosing pneumonia requires comprehensive evaluation of multiple factors.
Patients with pneumonia may present only with cough and no fever, or may exhibit no obvious symptoms at all. This is related to factors such as the patient's age, immune status, and the virulence of the causative pathogen. Especially among elderly individuals or those with weakened immune responses, even when lung inflammation is present, it may manifest only as cough without fever.
Cough is a protective reflex response triggered by irritation of the respiratory tract, while pneumonia refers to an inflammatory reaction in lung tissue. Although the two are somewhat related, they are not necessarily linked. Therefore, the presence of cough without fever alone is insufficient to diagnose pneumonia.
To confirm pneumonia, imaging examinations such as chest CT or X-ray, along with blood tests, are necessary to identify a substantial infection in the lungs and determine the causative pathogen.
