How many degrees constitutes a fever
Disease description:
Female, 23 years old. Has had a cough and headache since two days ago; likely has a cold. This morning, she felt she had a fever and wanted to take her temperature. What temperature is considered a fever?
Normally, the body temperature ranges from 36.5°C to 37.5°C. When body temperature exceeds this range, it is generally considered as fever:
1. Low-grade fever: temperature between 37.6°C and 38.0°C.
2. Moderate fever: temperature between 38.1°C and 39.0°C.
3. High fever: temperature ranging from 39.1°C to 40.0°C.
4. Persistent high fever or hyperpyrexia: temperature exceeding 40.0°C.
These are only general classifications, and normal body temperature may vary slightly among individuals. Temperature responses may also differ in children and elderly people. In addition, fever may be a natural response of the body to infection or illness. At home, body temperature can be monitored using non-contact thermometers such as oral, axillary or ear thermometers. If there are any concerns, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly.
