What does an elevated monocyte count indicate?
Disease description:
The child at home has been crying and irritable recently. After examination, the doctor said the monocyte count is elevated. I would like to know what an elevated monocyte count indicates.

Elevated monocytes may indicate the following conditions:
1. Infection or inflammation: Infections or inflammatory conditions may cause an increase in monocyte count, such as during the recovery phase of acute infection, infective endocarditis, malaria, kala-azar (visceral leishmaniasis), and active tuberculosis.
2. Chronic infection or inflammation: Certain chronic infections or chronic inflammatory diseases, such as tuberculosis, chronic kidney disease, and rheumatic disorders, may also lead to a prolonged increase in monocytes.
3. Autoimmune diseases: Conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis may result in abnormal immune system activity, leading to elevated monocyte levels.
4. Hematologic disorders: Diseases such as monocytic leukemia and myelodysplastic syndromes can cause abnormal proliferation of bone marrow cells, resulting in monocytosis.
