Disease description:

I have a red papule on my face, and the surrounding skin has started to become red as well. Today, I accidentally scratched and ruptured a pustule, from which foul-smelling pus was discharged. May I ask why folliculitis produces such a foul odor?

The reasons why folliculitis emits an odor include: 1. Bacterial infection: After hair follicles are invaded by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, these bacteria multiply inside the follicles and produce metabolic byproducts such as sulfur compounds and ammonia substances, which have an unpleasant odor. 2. Sebaceous gland hyperfunction: Excessive sebum secretion leads to over-saturation of the hair follicles, making them prone to bacterial growth. Under inflammatory stimulation, local tissue may become necrotic, further intensifying odor production. 3. Abnormal keratinization of the skin: Narrowing or blockage of the follicular opening prevents normal discharge of sebum, leading to formation of small pustules, which emit a foul odor when ruptured. 4. Poor lifestyle habits: Neglecting personal hygiene, frequently staying up late, consuming spicy foods, and other unhealthy habits can reduce the body's immunity, increasing the risk of bacterial infection, thus triggering folliculitis and producing unpleasant odors.
