Is emphysema contagious?
I have been coughing a lot recently and something didn't feel right. After an examination, I was diagnosed with emphysema. I would like to know, is emphysema contagious?

Emphysema itself is not contagious. It is a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) primarily caused by long-term smoking, air pollution, genetic factors, and repeated respiratory infections, rather than direct transmission of viruses or bacteria. Emphysema leads to decreased elasticity of the airways, overexpansion of the lungs, and impaired gas exchange.
Although emphysema itself is not directly transmissible to others, patients may be more susceptible to complications such as pneumonia, which can be contagious. Therefore, individuals with emphysema should avoid exposure to sources of respiratory infection and receive regular vaccinations against influenza and pneumococcal disease to reduce the risk of infection.
If you or a family member are concerned about having similar symptoms, seek medical attention promptly. A doctor will make a diagnosis based on medical history, physical examination, and pulmonary function tests, and develop an appropriate treatment plan.
