Eating spicy food does not cause acne. The primary compound responsible for the spiciness in chili peppers is capsaicin, which has anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties and does not trigger acne development. What can contribute to acne is consuming high-fat, high-protein, and high-sugar foods—such as hot pot or barbecue—alongside spicy foods. Intake of these foods can increase insulin production in the body, which in turn stimulates androgen production as well as the production of another cell signaling molecule called insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1). The increased levels of these substances can lead to excessive sebum secretion by the sebaceous glands. Excess sebum provides more nutrients for bacteria on the skin, promoting bacterial overgrowth and ultimately causing acne. It is recommended that individuals maintain a balanced diet, eat清淡 (light and mild) meals, consume more vegetables and fruits, and moderately reduce intake of fatty, protein-rich, and sugary foods. Regular sleep patterns and appropriate skin care routines can also help alleviate acne.
