What causes saliva to become very sticky?
I feel that my saliva is very sticky today, constantly lingering in my mouth and hard to swallow. What are the reasons for having thick, sticky saliva?
The following situations may cause saliva to become thick and sticky:
1. Environmental factors: Long-term exposure to dry, polluted, or harmful environments may lead to dry mouth and thick saliva. This situation is especially common during the hot summer or dry autumn seasons.
2. Oral problems: Conditions such as gingivitis and oral ulcers may alter the composition of saliva due to inflammatory stimulation, making it sticky.
3. Medication side effects: Certain medications, such as antidepressants and antihistamines, may affect the function of salivary glands, causing abnormal saliva secretion, which may manifest as thick saliva.
4. Neurological diseases: Neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease and stroke may affect the coordination of oral muscles, leading to difficulty swallowing and resulting in a buildup of thick saliva in the mouth.
5. Water intake and dietary habits: If you drink little water or frequently consume high-salt or sweet, greasy foods such as pickled vegetables, preserved vegetables, candied fruits, and sweets, these may stimulate the salivary glands, leading to reduced or thicker saliva secretion.
If symptoms persist or worsen, timely medical consultation is recommended.
