What should I do if my hands itch after handling Chinese yam?
I peeled some Chinese yam that my family bought, but my hands became very itchy afterward, and I think I might be allergic. What should I do about the itching caused by handling Chinese yam?
Hand itching symptoms that occur after handling yam are mainly caused by substances such as saponin and plant alkaloids contained in yam. These substances may trigger allergic reactions upon contact with the skin. The following measures are recommended to alleviate symptoms:
1. Rinse with clean water: Immediately rinse the affected area with clean water to reduce the worsening of redness, and cold water can help relieve itching.
2. Cold compress: Apply a cold compress using cold water or an ice pack to the affected area to help reduce itching and swelling.
3. Avoid scratching: Try to avoid vigorously scratching the affected area to prevent worsening skin damage and the risk of infection.
4. Topical medication: Apply anti-allergy medications locally, such as calamine lotion, urea cream (尤卓尔), or halometasone cream, which can quickly alleviate itching symptoms.
5. Oral medication: If topical medications are ineffective, oral antihistamines may be considered, such as cetirizine, loratadine, or ebastine, but should be used under a doctor's guidance.
Be cautious when handling yams to avoid direct contact of the yam mucilage with the skin. If symptoms persist or worsen, prompt medical attention is recommended.
