Pregnancy is calculated from the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP). The entire gestational period—from conception to delivery—lasts approximately 40 weeks (about 280 days). However, because fetal development varies among individuals, the estimated due date (EDD) may differ. It is considered normal for delivery to occur up to one to two weeks before or after the EDD. Delivery before 37 weeks’ gestation is classified as preterm birth, while delivery after 42 weeks’ gestation is termed post-term pregnancy.
