What does “gynecological bimanual examination” mean?
Disease description:
I’m planning to visit the hospital soon for a comprehensive gynecological examination. My best friend mentioned that the examination includes a “bimanual pelvic exam.” What exactly is a bimanual pelvic exam?
Bimanual gynecological examination is a component of pelvic examination. During this procedure, the examiner inserts two fingers—or sometimes one finger—of one hand into the patient’s vagina while simultaneously placing the other hand on the patient’s abdomen to assist in palpation. This bimanual examination enables assessment of the vagina, uterine body, fallopian tubes, cervix, ovaries, pelvic cavity, and parametrial connective tissues, helping to detect any abnormalities.
