If a newborn’s hands and feet feel cold, clothing should be added promptly. Additionally, placing the newborn in the mother’s arms allows her body heat to help raise the baby’s temperature. During this time, gently warming the baby’s hands and feet—using warm hands or a warm (not hot) water bottle—is also helpful. Cold hands and feet in newborns are typically caused by a cool ambient environment or insufficient clothing, and usually do not require specific medical treatment. However, close monitoring of the baby’s overall body temperature is recommended to rule out any underlying pathological causes.
