What are the symptoms of liver cysts?
Disease description:
A relative was found to have a hepatic cyst during a routine physical examination. I haven’t heard him report any symptoms. What are the symptoms of hepatic cysts?
Hepatic cysts are a common benign cystic liver disease, with symptoms varying depending on the size, location, number, and type of cyst. Generally, most patients with hepatic cysts are asymptomatic; however, as cysts gradually enlarge, the following symptoms may occur:
1. Abdominal discomfort: Patients may experience upper abdominal fullness, dull pain, or discomfort—particularly exacerbated by physical activity or eating. These symptoms may impair appetite and digestive function.
2. Pain: Larger cysts may cause dull pain in the hepatic region or right upper quadrant abdominal pain.
3. Gastrointestinal symptoms: When hepatic cysts compress normal hepatic tissue, symptoms such as indigestion, nausea, and vomiting may develop.
4. Jaundice: If multiple cysts coalesce and enlarge significantly, compression of the biliary tract may lead to jaundice, manifesting as yellowing of the skin and sclera.
Patients experiencing any of these symptoms should seek timely medical evaluation for appropriate diagnostic testing and management.
