Chest numbness can arise from various causes, including nerve compression, neuropathy, chest wall injury, cardiac disease, anxiety, or panic attacks. Numbness beneath the left side of the chest is less likely to be related to cardiac disease, as cardiac-related chest pain typically occurs behind the sternum or radiates to the left arm. More probable causes include intercostal neuralgia, cutaneous neuropathy, muscle injury, or inflammation. For instance, intercostal neuralgia—often resulting from muscular compression or inflammation—can cause numbness or pain along the course of the affected nerve. Anxiety or panic attacks may also produce numbness in various parts of the body. If chest numbness occurs—especially when accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, burning sensation, or dyspnea—prompt medical evaluation is essential to rule out cardiac disease or other serious conditions.
