Dr. Zhou Chao
Long-term use of lactulose may indeed cause certain side effects. Although lactulose is primarily used to treat constipation, prolonged or excessive use can lead to a range of health issues. Specifically, long-term lactulose intake may disrupt electrolyte balance—particularly impairing the absorption of sodium and potassium—potentially resulting in hyponatremia or hyperkalemia. These imbalances may manifest as muscle cramps, cardiac arrhythmias, and, in severe cases, even coma. Lactulose may also cause gastrointestinal discomfort—including bloating and nausea—as well as neurological symptoms such as headache. Prolonged, high-dose use may lead to drug dependence, impairing the intestine’s ability to restore normal peristalsis and the natural urge to defecate. Additionally, the liver and kidneys—responsible for metabolizing lactulose—may experience increased functional burden, potentially leading to hepatic or renal dysfunction over time. When using lactulose, always follow your physician’s instructions, avoid long-term or excessive use, and closely monitor your body’s response; consult a healthcare provider promptly if any adverse effects occur.
