Is it good to drink Yakult on an empty stomach?
Disease description:
I’ve recently been experiencing poor digestion. Even after taking Jianwei Xiaoshi Pian (a traditional Chinese medicine for promoting digestion), I haven’t noticed much improvement. My abdomen feels bloated and uncomfortable, and I’m extremely anxious due to constipation. A close friend recommended drinking Yakult, saying it helps improve gastrointestinal motility. I usually drink it on an empty stomach. Is it advisable to consume Yakult on an empty stomach?
Drinking Yakult on an empty stomach is not recommended. As a lactic acid bacteria beverage, Yakult does contain live lactic acid bacteria, which can promote gastrointestinal motility and improve digestive function. However, on an empty stomach, the organic acids in Yakult may stimulate gastric mucosal cells to secrete excess gastric acid, potentially causing discomfort such as acid reflux and heartburn—and even gastric pain. Moreover, the live lactic acid bacteria and organic acids in Yakult may irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa; long-term consumption on an empty stomach could damage the mucosa and increase the risk of chronic gastrointestinal disorders. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid drinking Yakult while fasting—especially for individuals with compromised gastrointestinal function. The optimal time to consume Yakult is approximately one hour after a meal, as this timing supports intestinal motility and aids digestion while minimizing irritation to the gastrointestinal mucosa, thereby helping maintain gastrointestinal health.
