Can pregnant women use mouthwash?
Disease description:
I have some oral inflammation and would like to use mouthwash. May pregnant women use mouthwash?
Pregnant women can safely use mouthwash during pregnancy. Mouthwash primarily helps eliminate oral bacteria and clean the mouth, thereby aiding in the prevention of dental caries, periodontitis, and other oral health issues. As immunity may decrease during pregnancy, using mouthwash can help maintain oral health and reduce the risk of oral or gastrointestinal diseases. However, pregnant women should observe the following precautions when using mouthwash:
1. Choose a mouthwash specifically formulated for pregnant women, carefully considering its safety and suitability. Ensure that its ingredients are natural and gentle, posing no adverse effects on the developing fetus.
2. Avoid prolonged or excessive use of mouthwash, as certain chemical ingredients may potentially affect fetal health. It is recommended to use mouthwash 3–4 times daily, rinsing for 2–3 minutes each time.
3. Mouthwash cannot replace toothbrushing. Pregnant women should maintain good oral hygiene habits—brushing teeth thoroughly twice daily (morning and evening) with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a mild toothpaste.
