What is the normal value for hematocrit?
Disease description:
I underwent a blood test and found that my hematocrit level is elevated. What is the normal range for hematocrit?
Hematocrit refers to the height (in millimeters or as a percentage) of the packed red blood cells in a standardized test tube after anticoagulated whole blood has been thoroughly mixed, centrifuged, and allowed to stand for one hour under standard conditions. Due to physiological differences between sexes, normal hematocrit values differ between males and females. Typically, the normal range for males is 38%–50%, and for females, it is 35%–45%. Values falling outside these ranges are considered abnormal hematocrit.
