Is a resting heart rate of 100 beats per minute normal?
Disease description:
During my recent hospital check-up, my heart rate was measured at 100 bpm. Is a resting heart rate of 100 bpm considered normal?
Heart rate: 100 beats per minute (bpm). If the rhythm is sinus, this falls within the upper limit of the normal range. The normal resting heart rate is 60–100 bpm for sinus rhythm. A heart rate exceeding 100 bpm with sinus rhythm is termed “sinus tachycardia.” This may occur physiologically under conditions such as smoking, alcohol consumption, drinking strong tea or coffee, or emotional stress—and typically resolves spontaneously with rest. If you experience symptoms such as chest tightness or palpitations, we recommend visiting a hospital for a 24-hour Holter monitor (ambulatory electrocardiogram) evaluation.
