I’ve been menstruating these past few days, and I notice blood in my urine when I urinate. I’m not sure what’s causing this. Could you please explain why blood appears in the urine during menstruation?

Hematuria (blood in the urine) during menstruation requires careful observation to determine whether it is caused by urinary tract inflammation or infection. While microscopic hematuria detected on urinalysis during menstruation is generally not a cause for concern, persistent hematuria after menstruation has ended may indicate a urinary tract infection (UTI). In such cases, a urinalysis must be performed, and a color Doppler ultrasound examination is also recommended. If an infection is confirmed, oral antibiotics are required. Additionally, avoid holding urine for prolonged periods.
