Introduction
Conjunctivitis (pink eye) is primarily transmitted via ocular secretions. During the acute phase of conjunctivitis, large amounts of discharge accumulate in the conjunctival sac, and these secretions contain a high concentration of pathogenic bacteria. When patients rub the affected eye, their hands become contaminated with these secretions and subsequently touch other objects. Healthy individuals who then touch these contaminated objects and rub their eyes may become infected with the bacteria.

“Red eye disease” (conjunctivitis) is an acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis—particularly infectious conjunctivitis. It commonly occurs during spring and summer. Once someone contracts this condition, family members are highly susceptible to infection. Therefore, patients diagnosed with red eye disease should observe appropriate isolation and seek prompt medical treatment. But how exactly is red eye disease transmitted?

How Is Red Eye Disease Transmitted?

Red eye disease spreads primarily through contact with ocular secretions. During the acute phase, the conjunctival sac produces copious secretions containing high concentrations of pathogenic microorganisms. When a patient rubs the affected eye, these secretions transfer onto their hands; subsequently, touching other objects contaminates them. Healthy individuals who then touch these contaminated surfaces—and subsequently rub their own eyes—risk bacterial or viral infection. Thus, during the acute phase, patients are advised to rest at home. Additionally, they should use separate personal items (e.g., towels, pillows, utensils) to prevent intra-familial cross-contamination. Prompt treatment with appropriate antibacterial or antiviral medications is also essential.

Prevention of red eye disease involves several key measures: maintaining good ocular hygiene—including frequent handwashing and avoiding eye rubbing; refraining from touching the eyes of infected individuals; and immediately washing and disinfecting hands if accidental contact occurs with an infected person’s eyes or secretions to prevent cross-infection. Additionally, avoid excessive eye strain and prolonged use of electronic devices such as computers, smartphones, and tablets. Regular physical exercise helps strengthen the immune system.

Patients with red eye disease are advised to wear sunglasses when outdoors to minimize irritation from wind or bright light. We hope this information proves helpful.
