What are the risks of laser vision correction for myopia?
Currently, the incidence of myopia is very high. If you go to school, you may notice that more than half of the children in your class wear myopia-correcting glasses at an early age—this can cause significant difficulties in their future lives and careers. To prevent myopia, it is essential first to understand its underlying causes. So, what are the potential risks associated with laser vision correction for myopia?
Potential Risks of Laser Myopia Correction
After laser treatment for myopia, the cornea may become thinner than before, increasing susceptibility to rupture upon external trauma. Some patients develop dry eye syndrome and ocular discomfort (e.g., grittiness) more than 10 years postoperatively. Dry eye may lead to adverse effects such as glare, reduced night vision, and decreased visual acuity. In certain cases, the corneal tissue may fail to adequately resist intraocular pressure, potentially resulting in keratoconus—a progressive thinning and bulging of the cornea—which, in severe instances, may ultimately lead to vision loss. Furthermore, failure to follow the physician’s recommendations for postoperative care significantly increases the risk of corneal haze and blurred vision.

If any of these symptoms occur, we recommend seeking prompt medical evaluation and treatment. For individuals with dry eye syndrome, dietary adjustments—including increased intake of vegetables and fruits—and minimizing use of electronic devices (e.g., smartphones, iPads, and computers) are advised, allowing adequate time and opportunity for ocular recovery. Following excimer laser surgery, some patients experience refractive regression—that is, a gradual return toward their preoperative refractive error. This constitutes a known surgical complication; importantly, the procedure only corrects existing refractive errors and cannot prevent future changes.

We strongly advise patients to carefully weigh their options before proceeding with laser vision correction. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
