Introduction
Penile impairment: Phimosis can restrict the glans penis, impairing its normal development and potentially resulting in a significantly reduced coronal circumference, thereby affecting sexual intercourse.
Infection: Phimosis predisposes to accumulation of smegma; improper hygiene may lead to secondary inflammatory conditions, such as prostatitis or orchitis.
Some men experience phimosis (excessively long foreskin). If left untreated, it may adversely affect health—including penile injury, premature ejaculation, infections, and infertility.
① Penile Injury
With phimosis, adhesions between the foreskin and glans penis commonly occur. Because the glans remains enclosed within the foreskin, its normal development may be impeded due to constriction. In severe cases, the coronal diameter of the glans may become significantly reduced, thereby impairing sexual intercourse.
② Premature Ejaculation
In cases of phimosis, the glans remains constantly covered by the foreskin, resulting in reduced tactile stimulation and friction. Consequently, during sexual intercourse, the glans becomes hypersensitive, potentially triggering premature ejaculation.
③ Infections
Phimosis creates a warm, moist environment conducive to bacterial growth and proliferation. Over time, this may lead to accumulation of smegma, predisposing individuals to balanoposthitis or urinary tract infections. Improper management may further trigger secondary inflammatory conditions, such as prostatitis or orchitis.
④ Infertility
Phimosis can impair male fertility. Failure to maintain adequate hygiene or delay in undergoing circumcision may allow smegma accumulation, contributing to prostatitis—which in turn compromises sperm motility and seminal viscosity—ultimately increasing the risk of infertility.
