What causes a hard lump on the nose?
A hard lump on the nose may indicate a foreign body, which requires prompt removal. It is recommended to visit an otolaryngology (ENT) department at a hospital for a nasal bone CT scan. Alternatively, the lump could be a bony callus formed following nasal bone fracture; such calluses may gradually flatten over time. Nevertheless, to ensure optimal health, it is advisable to consult an ENT specialist for appropriate evaluation and management.
The lump may also result from folliculitis (inflammation of a hair follicle). In such cases, avoid directly touching or squeezing the area with your hands—hands harbor numerous bacteria, increasing the risk of secondary infection. Moreover, the nose lies within the “danger triangle” of the face, where veins drain directly into the cranial venous sinuses without intervening valves. Manipulation or squeezing may allow bacteria to enter the brain directly, potentially causing meningitis.
Maintain adequate rest and avoid staying up late. Consume easily digestible foods, and avoid spicy, irritating, greasy, or overly salty foods. Refrain from alcohol consumption and smoking. It is also advisable to limit intake of high-protein foods such as eggs, lamb, and beef. Drink plenty of water.
