How long does the cervical os take to recover after vaginal delivery?
Most women today prefer vaginal delivery, but after childbirth, the cervix typically enlarges to varying degrees. So, how long does it take for the cervical os to return to its pre-pregnancy state following vaginal delivery?
How Long Does It Take for the Cervical Os to Recover After Vaginal Delivery?
Generally, a woman’s body requires approximately 42 days to fully recover after vaginal delivery. Immediately after the baby is delivered, the uterus is round and firm, with its fundus located approximately one fingerbreadth below the umbilicus. On the first postpartum day, the uterine fundus rises slightly to the level of the umbilicus, then descends by 1–2 cm daily thereafter. By around day 10 postpartum, the uterus has descended into the pelvic cavity. As the uterus gradually shrinks in size, the cervix progressively closes. By day 42 postpartum, all major organ systems have largely returned to their pre-pregnancy state.

After delivery, the uterine decidua—particularly the portion where the placenta was attached—sheds, resulting in the vaginal discharge of lochia: a mixture of blood, necrotic decidual tissue, and mucus. The duration of lochia varies among individuals, averaging about 21 days. In some cases, it may last as briefly as 14 days, while in others, it may persist up to six weeks. Persistent or recurrent lochia postpartum may indicate complications and can adversely affect maternal health; therefore, prompt medical evaluation and treatment under physician guidance are essential.

Postpartum, close monitoring of the mother’s physical condition is crucial. Adequate rest, increased fluid intake, and early initiation of the first voiding (urination) are strongly recommended to prevent postpartum hemorrhage associated with urinary retention. Emphasis should also be placed on maintaining good personal hygiene—frequent clothing changes, proper perineal care—and balanced nutrition, including ample fresh vegetables.
