Can I still take statins if my blood lipid levels are low?

Introduction
Whether patients with low blood lipid levels can continue taking statins depends on individual circumstances, as follows: 1. If the patient was prescribed statins solely for hyperlipidemia and does not have comorbid conditions such as coronary heart disease, hypertension, or diabetes, statin therapy may be temporarily discontinued with close monitoring. 2. If the patient has hyperlipidemia along with hypertension, hyperglycemia, and/or cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease, statin therapy should be continued.

Whether patients with low blood lipid levels can continue taking statins depends on the specific clinical situation, as outlined below:

1. If hyperlipidemia is the sole condition—without comorbidities such as coronary artery disease, hypertension, or diabetes—and lipid levels have normalized following dietary modifications and statin therapy, statins may be temporarily discontinued under observation, with regular follow-up lipid monitoring.

2. If the patient has hyperlipidemia alongside hypertension, hyperglycemia, and/or cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease, statin therapy is indicated not only for lipid-lowering but also for plaque stabilization. Even after lipid levels normalize with combined statin therapy, dietary intervention, and exercise, continued oral statin treatment is required—provided liver function remains normal.
