How to remove melasma (chloasma) on the face
Today’s society is often described as “appearance-oriented,” and physical attractiveness holds significant importance for women. However, many women suffer from melasma—a common skin condition characterized by brown or grayish-brown patches on the face. This can cause considerable distress. So, how can facial melasma be effectively treated?
How to Remove Facial Melasma
Melasma is commonly treated with laser therapy, which yields favorable results. Laser treatment for melasma works by delivering targeted laser beams that selectively destroy melanocytes—pigment-producing cells—accumulated in affected areas. The damaged melanocytes rapidly break down and fade before being naturally eliminated from the body, thereby reducing or eliminating melasma.

The fundamental principle underlying laser removal of melanin is selective photothermolysis: when laser light of a specific wavelength is applied to the affected skin area for an appropriate duration, it is preferentially absorbed by melanin granules. Upon absorbing the light energy, these melanin granules rapidly expand and fragment into smaller particles, which are then phagocytosed and cleared from the body by macrophages—while surrounding healthy tissue remains unharmed. Nevertheless, due to the complex pathogenesis of melasma, individual responses to different types of lasers or intense pulsed light (IPL) therapies may vary significantly. Patients should maintain a light, bland diet, strictly avoid spicy and irritating foods, and completely abstain from smoking and alcohol consumption. Increasing intake of fruits and vegetables—rich in various vitamins, especially vitamin C and vitamin E—is highly recommended.

Melasma is highly sensitive to sun exposure. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation, X-rays, and prolonged sunlight exposure can all exacerbate melasma. Therefore, women with melasma must diligently practice sun protection in daily life—especially during summer months. Prolonged sun exposure should be avoided whenever possible, and comprehensive facial sun protection measures are essential. Combining broad-spectrum sunscreen with a wide-brimmed hat is strongly advised. We hope this information proves helpful. Wishing you optimal health and happiness!
