How to Effectively Supplement Qi Deficiency
Qi deficiency, in essence, refers to a group of disorders caused by diminished vital energy (Qi) in the human body. Patients with Qi deficiency commonly present with pallor, weakness in the limbs, and generalized fatigue. If left unaddressed over a prolonged period, Qi deficiency may lead to numerous serious health conditions. So, how should Spleen- and Stomach-Qi deficiency be managed?
Management of Spleen- and Stomach-Qi Deficiency
Mild cases of Qi deficiency can often be improved through dietary adjustments—for example, consuming more Chinese yam congee, Astragalus tea, or jujube congee. For more severe cases, it is advisable to consult a qualified Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner who can prescribe an individualized, pattern-differentiated treatment regimen. Clinically, Qi deficiency typically manifests as mental fatigue, shortness of breath, reluctance to speak, dizziness, poor appetite, loose stools, pale tongue with thin coating, and a weak pulse. However, when Qi deficiency affects different Zang-Fu organs, the clinical presentation varies accordingly.

In cases of Lung-Qi deficiency, symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, clear and thin sputum, spontaneous sweating, and aversion to wind may occur. Here, Bu Fei Tang (Lung-Tonifying Decoction) may be modified and prescribed. When Heart-Qi deficiency is present, patients may experience palpitations, shortness of breath—especially exacerbated by exertion—and chest pain. In such instances, Yang Xin Tang (Heart-Nourishing Decoction) may be selected and appropriately modified. Spleen-Qi deficiency may result in flaccid muscles, abdominal distension, low back or inguinal swelling, hematemesis, hematochezia, or menorrhagia in women. For these presentations, Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Spleen-Qi Tonifying and Qi-Lifting Decoction) is commonly indicated.

Patients are advised to maintain a light, bland diet, avoid spicy and stimulating foods, abstain from tobacco and alcohol, follow regular sleep-wake cycles, and avoid staying up late. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
