Introduction
How to Correct Kyphosis (Hunchback): 1. Maintain proper posture—whether standing or walking, keep your chest naturally upright and relax your shoulders backward. 2. Perform back-strengthening exercises: Lie supine on a bed, then place a 6–10 cm thick object under the most prominent area of the kyphotic curve; fully relax your body with arms naturally extended at your sides. 3. Wear orthopedic braces (e.g., “Beibei Jia”) to serve as a postural reminder.

In daily life, many people develop kyphosis due to prolonged poor posture while sitting. Kyphosis is a relatively common spinal deformity characterized by excessive posterior curvature of the thoracic spine. It commonly occurs in elderly individuals with age-related spinal degeneration, those with improper sitting or standing posture, and patients with conditions such as rickets or ankylosing spondylitis. So, how can kyphosis be corrected? Below, we address this question.

How to Correct Kyphosis

1. Maintain Proper Posture

In daily life, it is essential to consciously maintain correct body posture. Whether standing or walking, keep your chest naturally upright and your shoulders relaxed and drawn gently backward. When sitting, ensure your spine remains straight; avoid slouching over desks while reading or writing, and regularly remind yourself to correct your posture.

2. Perform Back-Strengthening Exercises

(1) Lie supine on a bed and place a 6–10 cm thick object beneath the most prominent area of the kyphotic curve. Relax your entire body, extend both arms naturally alongside your body with palms facing upward, and gently draw your shoulders backward. Maintain this position for at least five minutes; perform this exercise two to three times daily, adjusting frequency according to your tolerance.

(2) Stand facing away from a wall, approximately 30 cm away, with feet shoulder-width apart. Raise both arms overhead and extend them backward. Simultaneously tilt your head backward and attempt to touch the wall with your fingertips before returning to the starting position. Repeat this movement 10 times, performing two to three sets daily. Additionally, sleeping on a firm mattress helps maintain spinal alignment during sleep.

(3) Sit on a chair with a backrest, grasp the sides of the seat behind your buttocks with both hands, lift your chin, expand your chest, and draw your shoulders backward. Hold this position for 10–15 minutes per session, repeating three to four times daily.

3. Wear Orthopedic Bracing

Since kyphosis often results from long-term poor posture, orthopedic posture-correcting braces (e.g., “Beibei Jia”) may serve as helpful reminders. However, for definitive treatment, consultation with an orthopedic specialist is necessary for proper evaluation and management under medical guidance. Moreover, if kyphosis is severe and fails to respond to rigorous conservative therapy, periodic X-ray examinations every 1–3 months are recommended to monitor progression of the spinal curvature angle. Surgical intervention may be considered when indicated.

The above outlines methods for correcting kyphosis. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
