How is Paederus dermatitis treated?
During the seasonal transition from summer to autumn, people often experience various skin issues, such as numerous spots or lesions—commonly referred to as dermatitis. This condition may result from seasonal changes or insect bites, most frequently from the rove beetle (*Paederus* spp.). So, how is rove beetle dermatitis treated?
How Is Rove Beetle Dermatitis Treated?
Rove beetle dermatitis can be managed through traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), topical wet compresses, and pharmacological interventions. Treatment selection typically depends on the patient’s specific clinical manifestations. For patients in the acute phase, TCM formulas that promote dampness elimination, clear heat, and dispel wind—such as *Long Dan Xie Gan Tang* (Gentiana Decoction to Drain the Liver) or *Xiao Feng San* (Wind-Dispelling Powder)—may be considered. If the rove beetle exposure is mild, initial management may involve topical wet compress therapy to alleviate symptoms. Generally, affected areas should be cleansed with an appropriately diluted potassium permanganate solution or normal saline. Currently, the most common treatment approach is pharmacotherapy. Patients are advised to select appropriate medications based on their individual condition; those with more severe symptoms may benefit from antihistamines or intravenous procaine infusion. In cases of severe inflammation, systemic glucocorticoids may be used to control symptoms.

When bitten by a rove beetle, individuals typically develop erythematous, swollen, and spotted skin lesions—especially those with sensitive or allergy-prone skin. The bite triggers acute local inflammation and, in some cases, systemic symptoms. Maintaining good environmental hygiene is essential; insecticides should be applied promptly indoors or in areas where rove beetles congregate to eliminate these and other insects.

In daily life, maintain regular dietary habits: avoid spicy, irritating, or overly rich foods; refrain from binge eating; and ensure adequate sleep to avoid staying up late. We hope this information is helpful to you.
