Introduction
Patients with fulminant myocarditis present with symptoms such as palpitations, chest tightness, fever, generalized fatigue and weakness, and dyspnea. In severe cases, it may lead to arrhythmias, syncope, cardiogenic shock, or sudden death. Generally, patients with fulminant myocarditis develop symptoms—including fever, diarrhea, and cough—within several days to one week prior to onset. At this stage, the condition is often misdiagnosed as an upper respiratory tract infection or enteritis.

Myocarditis is a type of heart disease that differs significantly from other cardiac conditions, as it involves inflammation of the heart muscle caused by various factors. In China, viral myocarditis—the most common form—is triggered by viral infections. Another distinct type is fulminant myocarditis. So, what are the early warning signs of fulminant myocarditis?

Early Warning Signs of Fulminant Myocarditis

Patients with fulminant myocarditis commonly experience palpitations, chest tightness, fever, generalized fatigue and weakness, and shortness of breath. In severe cases, it may lead to arrhythmias, syncope, cardiogenic shock, or sudden cardiac death. Typically, patients develop symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, or cough several days to one week before onset—often leading to misdiagnosis as an upper respiratory tract infection or gastroenteritis. Some patients with fulminant myocarditis may present with moderate fever, diarrhea, sore throat, rash, or nonspecific cardiac discomfort prior to disease onset. Additional symptoms may include loss of appetite, dyspnea, fatigue, pallor, and palpitations.

Fulminant myocarditis is frequently precipitated by upper respiratory tract infections, enteroviral infections, or other viral illnesses, resulting in acute onset and tachycardia. However, this condition often presents with prodromal symptoms during its early stage, making early recognition feasible.

In daily life, prompt medical evaluation and treatment are essential upon noticing any of these symptoms to prevent disease progression. We hope this information is helpful to you.
