First, genetic factors—particularly retinoblastoma.
Second, biological factors, such as viral infections.
Third, physical factors—including ionizing radiation, ultraviolet radiation, and trauma.
Fourth, chemical factors—for example, environmental pollution caused by chemical agents.
Fifth, congenital factors—many tumors arise from residual embryonic tissue.
The etiology of pediatric brain tumors remains incompletely understood. To date, the most widely accepted theory involves overexpression of oncogenes and mutations or loss of tumor suppressor genes. Specific etiological factors include the following:
